cocunutBattery

cocunutBattery is a very cool application for Macs. you can see all about your battery, the age of your mac, and how much it holds compared to how much it held when you first bought the mac/battery, and even battery load-cycles. The application is very simple, and that is about all it has. it only works on macs.

Time Machine Problems

Time Machine is a very cool application. I can use either a USB external hard drive, or use a time capsule. It will automatically backup my data, and with my backup drive attached, I can view and restore my backups in an AMAZING UI (user interface).

But as I realized the first time I tried to use it, there are MANY downsides.
1) To backup using time machine, I need my backup drive to be twice the size of my internal Hard Drive.
2) It gets unhappy with FileVault. Apperently, I was told that you should never have FileVault on anyways by an Apple Genius at the Genius Bar at my local Apple Retail Store. then why do they include it in OS X?
3) You can’t use it with network drives.
Fables
And heres a heads up. If one of the first things you did when you got your new Mac was turn on FileVault, and you have used up ALOT (I mean around 80 GB of a 160 GB hard drive (internal) then it will be impossible to turn it off. You will have to move or delete about 10 GB from your hard drive To turn off FileVault.
Moral: Keep your Hard Drive uncluttered, and ORGANIZED!

I went and tried My 200GB hard drive with Time Machine, and I have a 160 GB backup drive. When I try to backup, it said I needed to have a whole 300GB on my backup drive. I gave up at that point and started running in circles wondering what was wrong.
Answer:You need to have at least twice the size of your internal hard drive on your external backup drive (in this case, my backup drive would have needed to be at least 320 GB).

I go to do a backup and Time Machine is messing up. it is unable to interpret how big my home folder is.
Answer:Turn off FileVault

From those, you can probably tell that Time Machine is incredibly specific about the things it is happy about.
Conlusion: Time Machine overall is a very good product. It jut depends what conditions it is working in, such as cluttered, or encrypted.

Disctop

Disctop is a really cool piece of software, that is both freeware, and really awesome. when you insert a disc into your mac, it till actually show the disc on your desktop. for iMacs, this is really cool because it will show the disc on your screen where the disk actually is. for macbooks, it can’t quite show it on the keyboard, so it shows it on the top right of the screen. it will show it actual size, and if it is a music CD, then Disctop will go out to amazon.com and find the CD artwork, and display it on the cd (I mean the one on your desktop!).

here’s a video I made.

Desktopia

Here’s the bottom line:

Desktopia is an application where you can set different background pictures for different times, in which you can specify.
here is a screenshot of the controller.

It’s pretty basic, but incredibly convenient.
It only has one flaw: That it doesn’t work unless the app itself is running.
Now, what you see in the screenshot above is not the app, its only the controller. to make it so the app runs on startup, go to the app
lications folder in Finder, find a file called desktopia, then move it to the dock. right click the dock icon, then click open at login. then, you
can drag it off of the dock. then, in the top right, there will be a flower indicating its running.
click on that icon, and click open at login. when you do that, it should look like the image below.

Thats really all there is to it. You select the image add the time, and let it do the rest.

HandBrake

We all love to watch DVDs right? but sometimes when you want to watch them on the go, you have to have a player or something right? so thats why we get an iPod, or PSP, or iPhone. but you have to buy the right format from iTunes of the movie. but i just wanted my dvd on my iPod. dundundunda! here domes HandBrake. HandBrake is a 100% free application the transfers DVDs to most formats for a player. the newest version is only for OSX, but there are older versions for windows and linux. it has presets for things like iPhone, iPod lo-res, hi-res, PSP, and in the following formats: .mp4, .mkv, .avi, and .ogm. i use this al of the time on ipod lo-res for my dvds. for iPods, iPhones, PSPs, etc. you need to output it to .mp4. i use it for all of my DVDs.

Cooliris

When it comes to FireFox adddons, i usually go crazy. but for this i am so amazed about it that I’m posting it here. Cooliris is a really cool addon for firefox that lets you view image searches such as google images, yahoo images, and rss feeds in 3d. now not in actual 3d with 3d glasses, but so sharp that it looks 3d. also, it shows them on a big wall which is also 3d. by the way, if you get nauseous this is not for you, because you view your searches a a 3d wall that kinda moves in perspective. its hard to explain. also, when you click the image on the 3d wall, it makes the image bigger than all of the other ones, and zooms in so it is not quite full screen. but when it does that, f course the image will be pixelated from zooming in. so almost magically, you will see a white bar that has blue going acrosss it from left to right, and after the bar finishes (which will be from 3-10 seconds) it will look as sharp as a needle. its really really hard to explain, but try watching the youtube video below. also, they might call it piclens, but that is the old name. now it is called cooliris, but there the same thing.
